Plastic Gastronorms
Stainless steel gastronorms may be the gold standard when it comes to a multiuse kitchen prep, storage and cooking system but gastronorms are also available in a selection of other materials. Perhaps chief amongst these are plastic gastronorms, which similarly have a wide range of uses in the kitchen.
Like their stainless steel cousins, plastic gastronorms are made in a range of standard sizes. The full size gastronorm is known as the 1/1 and measures 53cm by 32.5cm. Other size plastic gastronorms come in various fractions of this standard size. This means you can get gastronorms in 2/1 (twice the size of the standard), ½ sizes, ¼ sizes and more.
You can then store these in fridges, freezers and food serving areas that have been designed to accommodate these standard sizes. This lets you maximise the use of space in your fridges and freezers, keeping more ingredients fresh for longer. Plastic gastronorms are also available in different depths, ranging from 1cm to 20cm, for different uses around the kitchen.
Plastic gastronorms are made from a selection of durable materials. Polycarbonate gastronorms are virtually unbreakable and perfect for use in busy kitchens where materials need to withstand constant use. High heat gastronorms are designed for using high temperatures and can be moved straight from cold storage into bain-maries or microwaves.
Also, because plastic doesn’t warp or bend, they can be used in steaming tables or hot holding facilities without any problems. That means food stays at a safe temperature for longer, helping you to comply with regulations and deliver better-tasting food. You can also get polypropylene gastronorms which are stackable and have clear measuring markings on the side to help regulate portions and ingredients.
